Most homeowners think about fertilizing in the spring. But what you do before your Bermuda goes dormant matters just as much - maybe more. Skipping a potassium application heading into fall is one of the most common mistakes we see, and it shows up the following spring when turf comes back thin and uneven.

Here's the thing about potassium - it's not about pushing growth. Nitrogen does that. Potassium is more of a toughness nutrient. It strengthens cell walls, helps the grass harden off before the first frost hits, and reduces how much winter damage your lawn takes from sudden temperature swings. It's quiet work, but it makes a real difference.

We use professional-grade Lesco spreaders to apply potassium evenly across the lawn. Coverage matters here. Uneven application means some areas go into dormancy better prepared than others, and that inconsistency shows up as patchy green-up in spring. Getting the spread right from the start is part of how we do things.

The other big benefit is what happens underground. When your Bermuda stores adequate nutrients before going dormant, the root system wakes up faster and more consistently once temps climb back up. That earlier, more even green-up in spring is a direct result of what you put into the lawn now - not what you apply after it's already trying to grow.

Pre-dormancy potassium is one of the key steps built into our lawn care programs. It's the kind of detail that separates a lawn that just survives winter from one that actually comes back strong.
